Professional Guiding. Remote Experiences. A Great Day Outdoors.

Backcountry Guide Co. was built around a simple idea: offer high-quality, well-run trips that let people experience the Northwest Angle in a way that feels remote, comfortable, and genuinely enjoyable.

Meet

Chris Halvorson

Chris Halvorson’s connection to the outdoors started early and never let go.

Born in Owatonna, Minnesota, Chris spent his school years in Morris, where he developed a strong work ethic and competitive mindset through hockey. Outside of school, it was always the outdoors that drew him in. Hunting, fishing, and exploring quickly became more than hobbies—they became part of who he is.

At just 17 years old, Chris began working at Flag Island, where he spent several formative years immersed in everything Lake of the Woods has to offer. From long days on the water to life around boats, float planes, and remote island hospitality, he gained firsthand experience that can’t be taught in a classroom. Those years shaped his respect for the lake, the North Country, and the guests who travel there looking for something memorable.

Chris has a natural passion for building relationships and sharing knowledge. Whether he’s helping guests target walleye, musky, or lake trout, or guiding someone through their first visit to the Northwest Angle, his focus is always on creating a positive, meaningful experience. He believes guiding is about more than catching fish—it’s about moments, stories, and memories that last long after the trip ends.

With multiple years of hands-on guiding experience and a genuine appreciation for remote hospitality, Chris brings energy, patience, and authenticity to every trip. He’s constantly learning, always exploring, and never takes the opportunity to be on Lake of the Woods for granted.
Chris lives by a simple belief: you can’t put a price on a memory but you can make sure it’s a great one.

What We Value

Backcountry Guide Co. is built on:

We take pride in running trips that feel personal, well planned, and enjoyable from start to finish.

WHY IT MATTERS

More Than Just a Day on the Water

Our trips are about more than fishing. They’re about scenic travel, comfortable setups, good meals, and not feeling rushed. We handle the details—trip planning, lodging coordination, fish cleaning, and packaging—so guests can focus on enjoying their time outdoors.

Whether it’s winter snowmobile travel, a summer day on big water, or a specialty backcountry trip, our goal is to create an experience you’ll want to talk about long after it’s over.
